After considering numerous locations over the course of several years, the University of Washington chose a 90s office building in Renton for consolidating a significant portion of hospital-based laboratory services provided by the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. DLMP has operated for over 40 years, serving as a "reference" lab for the Puget Sound region and beyond.

The new centralized lab will serve to operate 24/7 and combines 84,000 square feet of operations from six former DLMP locations. Upon completion, the completely renovated five-story lab-ready building will eliminate duplication of services and create economies of scale, as the larger space provides capacity for increased use of robots for automation of processing, creating efficiencies and lowering operating costs. It will also feature the flexible infrastructure necessary to adapt to advancements in technology and other future evolving requirements.

GLY worked with the client and design team on a ‘Universal Lab Plan’ concept, which unites the UW lab community together in a state-of-the-art facility that encompasses adaptability, wellness, and sustainability for a collaborative workplace.
