Microsoft Studios West Garage | Redmond

Massive excavation of one million cubic yards of dirt was initial stage of completely below-grade parking facility for 4,700 vehicles – one of the largest on the West Coast. The underground structure forms the foundation for a 10-acre green roof that serves as a plaza lid with ball fields, landscaping and three Commons buildings atop the deck.

Building challenges included close coordination of Commons foundation and mechanical and electrical infrastructure with garage and surrounding plaza elements. The entire project was built to sustainable standards, with a fast-paced schedule calling for accelerated deck-pour sequences of up to 100,000 square feet per week. The large structure was divided into several independent structures to address long-term shrinkage and durability issues.

This project was a major home run and big enough for all of us to share in knowing not everyone out there could have completed this project with the time and many other restrictions that were in place.
